As the inaugural activity for the Countering Transnational Corruption (CTC) Grand Challenge, USAID is bringing together a diverse array of stakeholders to innovate and crowdsource tools to safeguard mineral supply chains critical to the green energy transition from corruption. Green energy technologies all rely on a handful of minerals including cobalt, lithium, nickel, and rare earths. As the world transitions from fossil fuels to low carbon energy sources, many low and middle income countries are poised to capitalize on the surge of demand for green energy minerals for technologies from electric vehicle batteries to solar panels. But mineral rich countries risk facing the same resource curse that has plagued so many extractives rich countries.
